Waldo Houia
TK14 TrusteeWaldo Te Whānau Pani Tāmihana Houia is a retired senior lecturer of the University of Waikato and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi Indigenous university.
In 2007- mid 2008 Waldo was a visiting senior lecturer at the University of Hawaii in Hilo.
From 2009 – 12 he was director of Te Whakapiki i te Reo Professional Development for Teachers of Māori, an in-service Māori medium teacher development Second Language programme aimed at supporting and strengthening the capabilities of Māori medium teachers, improving teachers language proficiency, increasing teachers’ skills in the improvement of learners’ language achievement and raising kura (school) capacity and sustainability of a limited number of Māori immersion schools within the Waikato and Bay of Plenty geographical regions.
Upon retirement Waldo taught part-time at the University of Auckland to support students of Te Huarahi Māori in their learning through the medium of Māori.
He is an active Trustee member of his hapū Ngāti Rangi (Ngāti Porou) and presently runs wānanga through Te Taurahere of Ngāti Porou ki Kirikiriroa.
