I firstly wish to acknowledge past and current Members of the Committee of Management who have worked tirelessly over the years to get us all to this point. I am tertiary educated in Agricultural and Geological sciences and have extensive commercial and industrial business development experience.
Te Tumu Kaituna lies in the same rohe of Otukawa Whenua Limited Partnership of which I Chair, and which is facing the same developmental pressure from its neighbours, giving me a unique understanding of mid-to-long term decision making and the consequences of not analysing all opportunities available.
My Trusteeship, Committee of Management, Maori Land Governance and Directorship experience spans some 35+ years and ranges from dairy farming, mining and mineral processing, geothermal power development, forestry estate management, native forest conservation, and directorships on tourist attraction entities and Rotorua Regional Airport.
I believe I possess the necessary skill sets, appropriate levels of knowledge and experience in commercial business and management practices associated with residential, commercial and industrial property development. I am currently undertaking a 54-lot residential development programme in an established suburb of Rotorua. I am an owner in Te Tumu Kaituna 14 Trust whenua.
Combining my Governance and commercial experience, I wish to continue the mahi that my mama diligently but respectfully undertook to bring all the shareholder aspirations into reality. I know I can make a positive contribution to the Trust and a positive contribution towards the value of your share and growth of your assets.
I respectfully therefore seek your support and your vote.

options.
I am a registered member of the New Zealand Planning Institute and the New Zealand Association for Impact Assessment. I bring a Bachelor in Social Science majoring in Sociology and a Masters in Environmental Planning (MEP) with a specialty in policies and strategies regarding whenua Māori.
I completed an internship with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, was Kaitiaki on the Resource Management team for Ngā Pōtiki ā Tamapahore Trust. I have been Kaitohutohu Hangarau (Technical Advisor) to several environmental and urban planning forums and bodies.
I am the architect behind the Western Bay of Plenty Tangata Whenua Spatial Plan and also serve as technical advisor to Smartgrowth’s Tū Pakari Advisor. This important project will give mana whenua more resources and authority under the newly
drafted Resource Management reforms.
I bring a broad outlook, strategy and skills to leverage the best return for owners and our future generations of mokopuna. That involves ensuring our tikanga is reflected not only in our block but also the mauri of our taiao katoa in which our tūpuna left us to reign as mana whenua over. Kia ora e te whenua whānau whānui on Tumu Kaituna 14.
He uri au o Tapuika, Ngāti Rangiteaorere, Ngāti Uenukukopako, Ngāti Te Roro o Te Rangi, Ngāti Whakaue me Taranaki, Ngāti Apa.
I’m standing to be a trustee because I want to see as many owners reconnected with this whenua before anyone else does. That means putting owners at the top of the list for everything – housing, business, cultural spaces, camping and other developments. I want the owners to retain not just ownership and control of the whenua, but genuine mana whenua and mana motuhake that can be seen, heard and felt when on the whenua.
The strongest skills and qualities I bring are my expertise in communications and my passion for tikanga Māori across land and environmental protection.
I have more than 20 years in communications having worked in both the private and public sector. Over the past three years I have used those skills to campaign for the retention of the whenua and highlight concerns about the mining of it. As a trustee, I’ll ensure owners are kept updated and informed before major decisions are made. That I can promise you.
My knowledge of tikanga Māori comes from being raised by a whakapapa that is all about mana motuhake on all fronts especially in the land, language and environmental spaces. It is here where I’ll acknowledge my māmā Blanche Hohepa-Kiriona who passed away recently. Mum’s dream was to see this whenua retained and controlled by the owners and to be developed into a space where the Māori owners are seen and heard on the whenua.
I am māmā to a 9-year old son. A few years ago I took him to this whenua. He didn’t want to leave. One day soon, I hope he’ll be able to play on this whenua with your tamariki and mokopuna because whakapapa is everything.

Tahi Patrick Kelly
IN THE MATTER of the ELECTION OF TWO TRUSTEES for Tumu Kaituna 14 Trust
I have been nominated by my mother Ani Kelly for the role of Trustee, for the land block TUMU KAITUNA 14 TRUST. I have accepted this nomination and believe I can contribute and be meaningful in this role.
I am of Ngatihine/Te Arawa decent and was born and raised in Rotorua. I am the oldest of 4 with 3 younger sisters. I am 46 years old.
I am interested in this role for a number of reasons. I care about my family, I care about our people, and I see a need for change.
I have never been a trustee before, but I am willing to learn and follow the path of every “first timer”
I have ideas but at the end of the day I am just a spokesperson for the shareholders. I need to be able to listen, communicate, and keep them informed and updated. I see this as my primary role.
Other skills I can bring to the role include, great work ethics, excellent communication, honesty and integrity, fresh new approach and ideas, transparent, down to earth and approachable.
I am currently employed as a 12D Civil Designer for GHD pty ltd. based in Townsville.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Tahi Kelly

Tēnā koutou katoa, tēnā koutou me ngā ahuatanga o te waa. Ō tātou nei mate, noho mai I te ao wairua, tātou o te ao ora Kiaora tātou katoa. Ko ōku iwi ake ko Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Rangiteaorere, Ngāti Pikiao, Te Ure o Uenukukopako me ngā karangatanga maha o Te Arawa.
It is my privilege to stand as a Trustee as to me this whenua is precious to us all, he taonga tuku iho, a treasure left to us by our respective ancestors. In my case, through my grandparents on my fathers side, I am a direct descendant of six original owners in the block. I understand the history of the block and it is our job as owners and Trustees to preserve this whenua for future generations. Whilst I appreciate in any discussion about ‘development’ there is a fine balance between the social and commercial objectives, nevertheless I am committed to the paramount principle of not one hectare of this land being sold. To me this whenua whilst preserving the history and the ecosystem of this coastal environment can potentially provide, amongst other things, housing, employment, education and business opportunities for owners. This is what I pledge to give my commitment to is always placing owners as the ultimate beneficiaries of this whenua whether they be material benefits or spiritual benefits.
Experience; Āku mahi
I have had a vast array of experience, both past and present, in company executive roles and also company and organisational governance roles. Amongst others I was on the board of Te Putahi Paaho which established the Maori TV service and I was the International Chair for the worldwide indigenous broadcasters network. The relevant governance roles I hold today are sitting as a Trustee on three whenua Trusts as well as Chair of my grandparents whanau Trust which has land interests throughout the entire Arawa rohe. I currently sit as a board member on the Ngati Rangiwewehi Charitable Trust, Te Whare Whakaruruhau o Te Arawa and on the Maori Spectrum Working Group. The essence of governance & trusteeship for me is always looking to the vision for the Trust and making sure that any strategic objectives benefit owners both materially and spiritually. A key to good governance is communication and I also pledge that I would endeavour to ensure that the Trust keeps all owners informed of what Trustees are proposing.
Education; Mātauranga
I graduated from University of Otago with a BSc ( Physiology) 1980
Studied for Diploma of Business at Auckland University 1995
Graduated from NZ Institute of Directors Governance course in Governance 2017.
Most of my experience comes from life and work experience working in many companies & organisations.

Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou kātoa
I am 49 years old, a father to four tamariki and a husband to my wife Anna. We live in Onewhero, which is close to Te Puuaha o Waikato, on the west coast, in a farming community. After spending 10 years in the UK, playing and coaching rugby we decided to move back to Aotearoa with our two eldest children, to a life where we wanted to raise our tamariki. We are both currently teaching at Onewhero Area School. I am employed as a Physical Education teacher an Outdoor Education teacher and a kaiako of te reo Maori. I have been teaching YR 7 to YR 13 students for nearly 13 years, and I still love it!
After returning home from the UK, I rediscovering my love for my iwi, hapu and whanau with regard to our whenua left to us by our ti”puna. This triggered me to delve deeper into learning more about speaking te reo, understaning tfkanga and building long lasting whanaungatanga with our local koro ma and kuia ma in the local area of Ngaati Tiipa and my haukainga, Tapuika. This “burning flame” lead me to join the Tapuika lwi Authority in 2020. For me I see this as an honour to be able to represent my whanau with regard to the decision making and ongoing developments and manaakitanga of our whenua. This experience has allowed me to understand what I need to do to voice the opinions of our people. Making the right choice for our people allows us, as land owners, to move forward in today’s growing economy and changing world. Being a trustee for Tumu Kaituna 14 keeps the ahi ka burning within me so that if elected I make the right decisions for our iwi, hapu and whanau. I will do all I can to be a positive, informative and active trustee for all land owners of this block.
Kei a mātou ngā tangata whenua o tēnei whenua tūuturu o ou tātou tīpuna. Hei manaakitia mātou te whenua, te awa, te moana ara ka piki ake te wairua o to tātou iwi kātoa. E āwhinatia ana mātou te ahi kā e pā ana ki tēnei kaupapa. Otira he kaupapa tūturu tēnei mo o tātou tamāriki o tātou mokopuna kei te haere mai. Kia kaha te whānau.
